Ceramics and its Dimensions
The EU funded project "Ceramics and its Dimensions", which was led by Porzellanikon, came to an end after four years. The project partners from all over Europe met at the beginning of November 2018 in the rooms of the Bavarian state representation in Berlin for their final conference. The results are to be proud of. The interdisciplinary project has given lasting impulses - with a view to the history of ceramics as well as to their design and production.
Two scientific conferences were held as part of the project: 2015 in Belgrade and 2017 in Stoke-on-Trent. The declared aim of the two events was to make the ceramic legacy fruitful for tomorrow's creativity and to promote a dialogue between research and society. The kick-off event in particular contributed to the formation of cross-border networks. The debates documented on paper and in digital formats are a treasure trove of lasting value.
Visibility for a wide audience was ensured by a traveling exhibition that was developed by the Museo Internazionale delle Ceramiche in Faenza and was shown in Selb in 2015. It proved that ceramics is a universal language that has its local dialects. This diversity can only be recorded if museums cooperate internationally. Especially from East Central Europe, the exhibition showed many objects that changed our image of ceramics in the 20th century.
The Museo Nacional de Cerámica y Artes Suntuarias "González Martí" in Valencia documented treasures that are in front of everyone and yet mostly overlooked. A database of building ceramics was created here, which was flanked by book publications and social media activities. Without the bundled competencies of several institutions, this effort would not have been possible.
A key topic of the project was the active shaping of the future. Concern about cultural tradition goes hand in hand with the promotion of artistic and technical innovations. In the “Shaping the Future” module, students from Helsinki, Berlin, Belfast, and Copenhagen came together to a workshop at the KAHLA/Thuringia Porcelain GmbH porcelain factory. At the same time, outstanding young artists were honored as "Future Lights in Ceramics". The Potteries Museum & Art Gallery in Stoke-on-Trent provided a central component with its recipe book for museum educational work with clay.
Project duration: 1 December 2014 to 30 November 2018
