Porzellanikon acquires an extravagant vase with an unusual name

At the studio exhibition of the renowned Czech porcelain artist Jiří Kožíšek, which ended on 13 August 2023, Porzellanikon acquired a unique porcelain object with an unusual name. "Vzrušená" translates as "An awesome vase".

Jiří Kožíšek was the winner of the jury prize awarded to him last year at the porcelain market in Hohenberg. The object acquired is a vase created in 2023, which appealed to the main curator for the art and cultural history of porcelain at Porzellanikon, Petra Werner. "The body of the vase is covered in countless pointed elements, which gives it a somewhat provocative appearance and causes a slight shudder and tremor," says the porcelain expert. "The vase seems to be electrically energised. The pointed elements, which are hinged, are reminiscent of electrified spikes and give the impression of sudden, unexpected, uncontrolled movement." This is precisely what the curator finds so interesting, as a contrasting tension can be felt between the movement contained in the vase and the hardness and immobility of the porcelain.

The artist himself interprets the many pointed elements on his vase as fine hairs on the skin that stand up in a positive, emotional moment, a goosebump moment. He therefore finds the German translation of the title "Eine geile Vase" (An awesome vase) perfectly fitting, as the title alludes to a moment that evokes a strong, pleasant, emotional reaction. The Czech porcelain artist also likes to trigger humorous reactions in his audience with his artworks.

The curator is convinced that this extravagant vase will evoke a variety of associations and reactions from visitors at Porzellanikon. She would therefore very much like to show it alongside other porcelain objects. Porcelain pieces from the 1980s and 1990s also feature bold and unusual shapes.

With the acquisition of this vase, Porzellanikon is expanding the concept of "Interventions" in the permanent exhibition at Porzellanikon Hohenberg, in which earlier porcelain objects are juxtaposed with more modern pieces.
