New addition to the Selbling family
What exactly is a Selbling? This question inspired and still inspires many museum guests to think. Selblings - as they are affectionately called - are little gnomes made of porcelain and the mascots of Porzellanikon - State Museum of Porcelain, Selb and Hohenberg a.d. Eger. But where do they come from? A myth says that the little gnomes used to hide in the meadows and woods around Selb a long time ago and play many a trick on walkers. Once you discovered a Selbling and got to grips with it, they transferred their positive qualities to humans. To make the past tangible, the little Selblings have been recreated in Porzellanikon Selb.
The names of the Selblings are named after important personalities from the porcelain industry. The first edition of the Selblings was launched in 2004, and over the years - always on the occasion of the Porcelain Festival - more Selblings have followed and continued the series. This year's Selbling is called Dominik, named after Dominik Auliczek (1734-1804), a famous Bohemian sculptor who worked for Porzellanmanufaktur Nymphenburg as a model master and later as an inspector. As a Bohemian artist who worked most of his life in Bavaria, he is not only a suitable godfather for the Selbling, but also a perfect representative of the Bavarian-Czech Friendship Weeks 2023. With tailcoat and hat, Dominik continues the series of the Selbling family as Selbling number 19.
Dominik will be presented to the public for the first time at the Porcelain Festival on Saturday, 5 August 2023.
